Radionet

Funding support from the LSC Co-financing Theme Chest E-Learning and ICT in the Community provided an opportunity for CapeUK to extend to young adults its work on the application of internet radio to creative learning.

radioRadionet supports and develops e-learning opportunities for young adults, supporting learners to plan, produce and deliver an online radio programme which can go live within their own community setting and be linked to other groups. Participants develop a range of skills including computer use, researching using the internet, music technology, target setting, radio production and presentation, writing scripts and creating jingles. Each community group is given their own online radio station and home page within a pre-structured set of web pages on which to publish their own content.

The partner organisations are Ripple Education and Diversity in Bradford and Single Homeless Accommodation Project (SHAP) in Kirklees. The partners recruit the young people onto the project and provide ongoing support. Two of CapeUK's experienced creative practitioners provide the training.

recordThe content can range from local community news, stories, interviews, to music, drama and sporting reviews. This work supports the development of basic skills such as literacy and numeracy, and key skills such as team working, listening and speaking and problem solving. The project is designed to be flexible in meeting the different needs of a diverse group of learners.

Learners are supported through the accreditation process and are encouraged to showcase their work live on radio, thereby enhancing self-esteem and confidence and supporting the progression onto level two accreditation.
