Forum Theatre
Developed by Brazilian director, Augusto Boal, and based, in part, on the teachings of Paulo Freire, Forum Theatre is a specific body of techniques designed to teach people how to take an active role in their community. This could be through their local government, or through directly finding solutions to a problem in their particular community, whether it be environmental, social, political or economic. Recognized by the United Nations through UNESCO as an official "tool for social change", Forum Theatre is an enormously beneficial and useful bank of innovative techniques. It has been used all over the world to influence legislation and encourage the building of more civil societies. The project partners, based in Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Italy, UK, Bulgaria, France and Portugal, aim to explore the effects of Forum Theatre approaches in adult education, to learn about current developments in employing forum theatre as a means to encourage active citizenship, and to share practice.
Augusto Boal spoke about his vision for Forum Theatre at a conference held in Paris in spring 2005. A booklet - Adventures in Forum Theatre on the work has just been published.
The project is funded by the European Union through Socrates Grundtvig.
