This national Arts Award is a new scheme which recognises a young person's development through the arts and sits alongside other youth awards and qualifications within young people's records of achievement. It is designed to appeal to a wide range of young people, including those with particular artistic talents, those with special needs, and those at risk of social exclusion, recognising the distinctive effect of arts participation, cultural appreciation and leadership on a young person's development. The award can be run in formal and informal settings, provided young people are supported to make their own choices in terms of arts interests and challenges. The scheme is accessible and flexible as possible, in order to support many cultural interests and personal starting points. A young person who takes part in the award should develop both practical and critical arts abilities, as well as building key personal skills such as confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership.
