Creative Spaces 1 & 2: Children, young people and families as co-researchers in the design of gallery and museum learning
Creative Spaces 1
Please click here to view our findings from Creative Spaces 1 research project, this publication explores the ways in which young children experience the space of the museum or gallery and the effect this has on their learning. Last year’s ‘Creative Spaces’ programme, which engaged children as researchers in the design of museum and gallery learning, was very well received and the NW Hub has suggested a second round of action research projects.
Creative Spaces 2
Three venues from the North West Museum Hub have been chosen to undertake a second round of co-research.
• Manchester Museum focused on family learning and how the inquisitiveness and imaginative capacities of young children can shape the learning experience of the whole family… giving adults ‘permission not to know’. The findings will feed into the re-design of the Ancient Worlds Galleries as well as broader approaches to formal and informal learning with families.
• Tullie House Art Gallery and Museum, Carlisle looked at new ways of supporting teacher- led visits; interestingly, ‘permission not to know’ is also relevant in this context.
• The Whitworth Art Gallery plans to work with KS3 pupils in weekly sessions over a full term, investigating how engagement with contemporary art encourages self reflection and self awareness. An exploration of the language of ‘social and emotional learning’ will be a key element of the co-research.
