CapeUK has been commissioned by Youth Music to evaluate the national pilot of the Passport to Music initiative in Leeds.
Passport to Music is a three year project aimed at increasing the extent to which primary school pupils continue their music involvement on transfer to secondary schools. It seeks to do this by improving the sharing and recording of the music involvement of young people; enabling them to make informed music choices on transfer and ensuring their access to an appropriately wide range of music providers.
At the heart of the programme are peer mentors or ‘routefinders’ drawn from years nine to eleven in secondary schools. These students will work with pupils in primary years five and six, recording their musical journeys and needs and informing them of future musical possibilities. Training from an external consultant will support schools in their ability to replicate the approach in subsequent years.
The pilot will take place in three clusters, two based around secondary schools and one on a community setting. They will be supported by cluster co-ordinators and the project will be managed by Artforms, Leeds.
